Building Program

Phase I

We purchased 330 acres with a tranquil lake. Now we have no neighbors to infringe upon and we are free at last!

Phase II

We built temporary turn outs with plans to cover them later with sheet metal. A temporary office was constructed in 2010. We began applying for grants to build the permanent facility, designed to shelter-in -place to avoid evacuation during our hurricane season.

N.A.B.S. is wanting and planning to build a new shelter, which will be an earth shelter building (www.earthshelter.com) for our dogs. It will be built using a kit that includes the materials to form the structural shell and we will also need to purchase the wood, concrete, waterproofing, and insulation.

This particular type structure was chosen due to our proximity to the Gulf of Mexico and the unfeasibility to flee a hurricane with our rescues. Since these shelters are safe from hurricanes  we would also be able to temporarily accommodate dogs from local kill shelters as well as assist individuals' dogs that are not able to be safely transported.

These buildings are also safe from tornadoes, storms, lightning, and fire. They are more energy efficient to live in and operate and will use solar and wind powered generators, which would also allow N.A.B.S. to function during power outages, a “go green” theme. There combined efficiency would save cumulative annual man hours and finances allowing dogs to enjoy constant temperature control year round at an affordable cost. The earth shelter is also extremely quiet and you can't hear a thunderstorm which is good for our more fearful dogs. It is also virtually maintenance-free.

Two drafts of the proposed Sanctuary (above), courtesy of local Houston architect Mr. Joe Webb. These drawings were created by Joe Webb.  Although they may not be the final rendition, we are getting closer.  Thank you, Joe, for all your hard work and dedication to helping us design the NEW Sanctuary!
There will be two, Type 2, elevated, open end, 32' x 40' buildings (floor plan pictured above) connected by a 6’ x 6’ tunnel. It is a 4,290 square foot earth shelter with a 36 square foot connecting tunnel. We will also build 15 additional outside pens and a fenced area to secure The Sanctuary and serve as a secure play yard for exercise, swimming in our 200'x200' pond, and playtime with tin roofs for shade.

This building will also allow people to come add view the dogs at a physical shelter which will increase our adoptions considerably and the added space will allow us to increase our intake capacity from the present 50 dogs to 100, doubling our intake rate and allow us to save many more lives with a larger more cost efficient facility. We will be able to continue rescuing dogs from our local kill shelters as well as help individuals in our community re-home their dogs, thus reducing more turn-ins to shelters.
